Enryakuji 延暦寺

Enryaku-ji is a Tendai monastery on Mount Hiei, overlooking Kyoto. Saichō founded it in 788, introducing the Tendai sect of Mahayana Buddhism to Japan. The temple complex has undergone several reconstructions, with the main hall rebuilt in 1642 under Tokugawa Iemitsu.
