Suikyo Tenmangu Shrine enshrines the soul of Sugawara Michizane, who is worshipped as the god of study. The shrine's name, meaning "water mirror," comes from a story about Michizane looking at his reflection in the water. Kuroda Nagamasa, the first lord of Fukuoka Clan, moved the shrine to its current location to serve as a guardian for the east side of his castle.
